How to Choose and Maintain the Backpack Zipper

It's not easy to pick a backpack that's made of good quality and durable. That's why some people are willing to pay more for a good backpack, a good bag will stay with you for years. However, in the process of choosing the perfect backpack, most people tend to focus on the fabric, the design, and ignore one special feature that also determines the life of the backpack -- the zipper.

Choose the right zipper

The first thing you need to ask yourself is, "What am I doing with this backpack?" "Is this an ordinary bag? Going to work every morning with only the basics?" Or do you use it to carry clothes and gear when you go camping?

Zippers used in backpacks are usually divided into three types, the following are the advantages and disadvantages of the three zippers.

1、Plastic zipper

Plastic zipper is usually suitable for heavy backpack, such as for general outdoor activities and camping activities.
Advantages: durable, wear resistance; Not easy to dust
Disadvantages: Even if only one tooth is damaged, it can affect the normal use of the whole zipper

2、Metal zipper

Metal zippers are the oldest zippers, and the chain teeth are usually brass.
Pros: Strong and durable
Disadvantages: Rust and corrosion, rough surface, bulky

3、Nylon zipper

Nylon zipper is composed of nylon monofilaments wound around the center line by heating and pressing die.
Advantages: low price, flexible opening and closing, soft, smooth surface
Disadvantages: not easy to clean

How to maintain the backpack zipper

A backpack can't avoid wear and tear over time. Since zippers are usually the main point of stress on bags (and are often heavily worn parts), special attention should be paid to extending their service life. The longer you use the zipper, the better use you'll get of your backpack.

1、Don't force the zipper up

This is a common problem with zippers, and one that is often handled incorrectly. If the zipper is stuck in the fabric, do not force the zipper. Gently pull your head back and try to pull the fabric apart.

2、Don't overload your backpack

Overpacking will put more pressure on the zipper. An overstuffed backpack also makes you tug harder on the chain, making zippers more likely to break and get stuck. Paraffin, soap and pencil lead shaker can also be used as lubricant.

3、Keep zippers clean

Use soap and water to remove dirt from zipper teeth to prevent dirt from getting stuck in the pull head.
