What are The Types of Sewing Thread

Sewing thread refers to the thread used for stitching textile materials, plastics, leather products and books and periodicals. Sewing thread has the characteristics of sewability, durability and appearance quality. Sewing thread is generally divided into natural fiber type, chemical fiber type and mixed type because of its different materials. The characteristics of sewing thread also have its unique function because of its different materials.

One. Natural fiber sewing thread

(1) Cotton thread, cotton fiber as raw material after refining bleaching, sizing, waxing and other links made of sewing thread. Cotton sewing thread can be divided into no light or soft thread, mercerized thread and wax light. Cotton sewing thread has high strength, good heat resistance, suitable for high speed sewing and durable pressing. It is mainly used for sewing cotton fabric, leather and high temperature ironing clothes, but its disadvantage is poor elasticity and wear resistance.

(2) Silk thread, long silk thread or silk thread made of natural silk, has excellent luster, its strength, elasticity and wear resistance are better than cotton thread. Suitable for sewing all kinds of silk clothing, high-grade woolen clothing, fur and leather clothing.

Two. Synthetic fiber sewing thread

(1) Polyester staple fiber line, also called SP line, PP line, made of 100% polyester polyester staple fiber as raw material, with high strength, good elasticity, wear resistance, low shrinkage rate, good chemical stability. Polyester material is the most resistant to friction, dry cleaning, stone washing, bleaching and other detergents among all the materials. It has the characteristics of flexibility, adherence, full color, good color fastness and so on, ensuring excellent sewability and preventing wrinkles and jumping needles. It is mainly used for industrial sewing of jeans, sportswear, leather products, wool and military uniforms, etc. It is the most widely used sewing thread at present.

(2) Polyester long fiber high strength thread, also known as Teduolong, high strength thread, polyester fiber sewing thread, etc. Using high strength and low elongation polyester filament (100% polyester chemical fiber) as raw material, it has the characteristics of high strength, bright color, smooth, acid and alkali resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high oil rate, but poor wear resistance.

(3) nylon line, also called nylon line, nylon long fiber (nylon long silk line) is also called pearlescent line, bright line, nylon high elastic line (also called copy line). Made of pure polyamide filament, divided into long silk line, short fiber line and elastic deformation line. It is made of continuous filament nylon fiber, smooth, soft, elongation of 20%-35%, with good elasticity, burning white smoke. High wear resistance, good light resistance, mildew proof, color of about 100 degrees, low temperature dyeing. It is widely used because of its high sewing strength, durability, flat seams, which can meet the needs of a wide range of different sewing industry products. Commonly used is long silk thread, it has a large degree of elongation, good elasticity, its tensile length at the moment of fracture is three times greater than the same specification of cotton thread. Used for sewing chemical fiber, woollen cloth, leather and elastic clothing. The biggest advantage of nylon sewing thread is transparency. Because of its transparency and good color, it reduces the difficulty of sewing and matching and has broad development prospects. However, the rigidity of transparent line on the current market is too large, the strength is too low, the trace is easy to float on the fabric surface, and it is not resistant to high temperature, and the sewing speed can not be too high. At present, this kind of line is mainly used for decals, edge skewing and other parts that are not easy to be stressed.

Three. Mixed fiber sewing thread

(1) Polyester/cotton sewing thread, which is blended with 65% polyester and 35% cotton, has the advantages of both polyester and cotton, with high strength, wear resistance, heat resistance and good shrinkage, and is mainly used for high-speed sewing of all cotton, polyester/cotton garments.

(2) Core-wrapped sewing thread, filament as the core, made of natural fiber, strength depends on the core thread, wear resistance and heat resistance depends on the outer yarn, mainly used for high-speed and firm garment sewing. There are mainly cotton polyester sewing thread and polyester polyester sewing thread. Cotton polyester-wrapped sewing thread is made of high performance polyester filament and cotton, which is spun by special cotton spinning process. It has the characteristics of cotton with filament dry, smooth, less hairiness and shrinkage. Polyester polyester sewing thread is made of high performance polyester filament and polyester staple fiber by special cotton spinning process. It has filament like dry, smooth, less hairiness and extension shrinkage, which is superior to polyester sewing thread of the same specification.

(3) Rubber band line: also rubber products, but relatively thin. Often interwoven with cotton yarn, viscose silk into elastic band. Mainly used for shapewear, hosiery, cuff and so on. In addition to considering the type of fiber, the selection of sewing thread also needs to choose the appropriate type. Common sewing thread specifications are 202 (can also be expressed as 20S/2), 203, 402, 403, 602, 603 and so on. The first two digits "20, 40, 60" represent the number of yarns. The higher the number, the thinner the yarns. The last digit indicates that the yarns are made from several strands and twisted together. For example, 202 is made of two strands of 20 yarn twisted together. Therefore, the higher the number of stitches, the thinner the thread and the smaller the strength of the sewing thread. And the same number of yarn twist and sewing thread, the number of strands, the thicker the thread, the greater the strength.
